ION Trading published cost figures don't exist — like most enterprise software vendors, ION negotiates pricing per deal under NDA. But after eighteen years building, deploying, and (often) replacing CTRM systems for trading firms, the true total cost of ownership of an ION Allegro, Openlink, Triple Point, or comparable enterprise CTRM is well understood inside the industry.

This article breaks down what an SME or mid-market commodity trader actually pays for an ION-class CTRM over five years, and what the alternatives look like.

The five components of CTRM TCO

Most procurement teams underestimate CTRM TCO because they only price the licence. The licence is roughly 30–40% of true TCO. The other 60–70% lives in five other categories.

1. Licence and subscription. Annual user licences plus modules (trading, risk, hedging, accounting connector, regulatory reporting). For an SME 30-user deployment of ION Allegro, this lands at roughly £180K–£350K per year on a multi-year contract.

2. Implementation. First-time deployment runs 12–18 months. Implementation includes business analysis, configuration, data migration, integration with existing ERP and bank systems, user training, and parallel running. 3. Internal IT staffing. Enterprise CTRM systems require dedicated administrators. ION's deeper enterprise tier (Openlink for global trading houses) lands roughly 2–3x higher per user. Triple Point and Brady are broadly similar to ION Allegro for comparable deployments. Cloud-native re-platforming projects (replacing on-premise ION with a cloud version) typically come in at the high end of these ranges due to data migration complexity.

Where the SME gets squeezed

Three pricing dynamics bite SMEs harder than they bite enterprise customers:

Pricing power. A £20B trading house negotiating with ION has leverage. A £40M SME does not. The list price is the price.

Module bundling. Enterprise customers buy the full suite. SMEs try to buy just what they need. Most enterprise CTRM vendors price the modules in a way that makes "just what you need" land within 80% of the full suite price.

Implementation overhead. A six-month enterprise implementation amortises across hundreds of users. A six-month SME implementation amortises across thirty. Per-user implementation cost can be 5–8x higher at SME scale.

The result: SMEs pay 5–8x the per-user TCO that enterprises pay, for less functionality (because they can't afford the full suite).

To be fair: ION Allegro has functional depth in some areas (very deep curve management for energy, very deep regulatory reporting for European wholesale power markets) that modern integrated platforms have not yet matched. For energy-only firms operating in regulated wholesale markets, ION still has the deeper product.

For non-energy commodity traders — metals, soft commodities, agriculture, specialty materials — modern integrated platforms now meet or exceed legacy CTRM functionality at materially lower TCO. The decision in 2026 is no longer about whether the modern alternative works; it's about whether you have a specific functional reason to keep paying the legacy premium.

Are these numbers accurate?

The ION-side numbers are observed averages from UK and EU deployments at SMEs in the £30M–£300M revenue range, gathered over a decade of replacement projects. Individual deployments vary ±30%. ION does not publish pricing publicly and we cannot reproduce contract details.

What about ION's smaller products (e.g., Allegro Cloud, RightAngle)?

Cloud editions of ION products are priced at roughly 70–85% of the on-premise equivalent over a 5-year horizon. They reduce internal IT load but generally retain the implementation and upgrade economics.

Is migration painful?

The biggest barrier to replacing a legacy CTRM is data migration and parallel running, not the new system itself. Modern platforms with strong import tools can migrate a typical 30-user deployment in 4 months including parallel run. Be sceptical of any vendor (us included) who promises shorter than that — proper data validation takes time.

What about Murex, Calypso, and Wallstreet Suite?
